About MIMUC 2024

Welcome to the Manchester Interdisciplinary Mathematics Undergraduate Conference (MIMUC)!

This year, we're excited to host over 100 taught students from the Faculty of Science and Engineering and beyond for a vibrant and enriching two-day event.

MIMUC is more than just a conference; it's a celebration of the curious and innovative spirit of students in STEM. Our mission is to enhance the academic journey of undergraduate and Masters students at the University of Manchester by promoting interdisciplinary research and collaboration. Prepare to be inspired by a lineup of plenary speakers, including author and film-maker Simon Singh. Look out for our faculty and alumni panels: a great chance to ask questions and consider your future career.

Students, this is your stage! We warmly invite you to present mathematical topics that fascinate you – it's the heart of our conference! Your inspiration can be something interesting you learned in a module, a captivating fact you stumbled upon, or even your own research. For guidance and inspiration in crafting your presentation, explore our specially curated speaker resources.

As part of our exciting program, you'll also have access to industry talks and panel sessions. Here, experts reveal how mathematics is woven into the fabric of their professional lives. Plus, our research and alumni panels offer you the chance to engage with leaders in the field.

But that's not all! At MIMUC, we believe in the power of connection. Take advantage of the numerous networking opportunities with fellow students, industry professionals, and University of Manchester alumni. A special social event (TBA) will be the perfect backdrop for making new friends and sharing ideas.

Additionally, get ready for a bit of friendly competition! This year's MIMUC will include a fun and engaging contest.

So, bring your A-game and let your mathematical skills shine.

Get ready for an event that's as enjoyable as it is enlightening!

Student Talks

The deadline for abstract submission has now passed and we have finalised our list of student speakers. Thank you to everyone who applied to give a talk!

As well as the exciting plenary talks and panels, we are giving students the opportunity to give a student talk at MIMUC 2024. The best student talks will win prizes!

Students will be given the stage to deliver a presentation on a topic of their choice. Your inspiration could be something interesting you learned in a course unit, project work you've undertaken as part of your degree, or even your own research! We are hoping for topics to be as wide-ranging as possible, but there should be some mathematical component to your talk.

Students presentations will be 15 minutes followed by 5 minutes for questions and should be appropriate for a broad audience including undergraduate students from a range of disciplines.

We will be awarding the following prizes...

  • The prizes for Best Student Talks

    • First Place (£150 Amazon voucher)

    • Second Place (£100 Amazon voucher)

    • Third Place (£50 Amazon voucher)

  • The prize for the best talk by a foundation year or first year student (£50 Amazon voucher)
