How will the competition work?

  • The competition is open to anybody who registers for and attends MIMUC 2024.

  • The competition opened on Monday 4th March.

  • The competition closes on Tuesday 9th April.

  • The winning entry will receive a £50 Amazon voucher! And there may be other prizes...

What is the smallest positive real number you can specify in six words?
Rules

Identify a positive, nonzero real number. Write down your answer using at most 6 words, and submit it. The entry with the smallest number wins!

  • You can only use the Latin alphabet. No symbols! No digits!

  • Hyphens count as spaces (so ninety-nine is two words).

  • You can only use words (and meanings of words) that appear in the Cambridge Dictionary (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/ ).

  • It must be a number that can be computed and written down explicitly.

  • It must be non ambiguous, meaning well-defined and uniquely determined.

Examples
  • ❌ "e to the minus one billion" - 'e' is not defined in the provided dictionary as the Nepero number.

  • ❌ "Inverse of the largest known prime." - unclear what the largest known prime is.

  • ✔️ "One divided by ten googolplexes" - Great!

Multiple entries are allowed. Only one prize can be won per person. We encourage every attendee to submit one!

Please note that to qualify for the prize you must:

  • Complete this form to register for MIMUC 2024.

  • Complete this form with your competition entry.

  • Register your attendance in person at the conference on at least one of the two dates.

The winner of the competition will be announced during the conference.
