About MIMUC
The Annual Manchester Interdisciplinary Mathematics Undergraduate Conference
hosted by the Department of Mathematics, University of Manchester
will be held on Wednesday 22nd March and Thursday 23rd March 2023.
MIMUC 2023 is proud to be sponsored by the Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research, and our student prizes are sponsored by the University of Manchester Data Science Society.
MIMUC will bring together over 100 participants, taught students, from across the Faculty of Science and Engineering and beyond for an exciting two-day program of talks and events!
Aiming to improve the student experience of undergraduate and Masters students of the University of Manchester and to encourage interdisciplinary research and collaboration across students of STEM, this is the perfect opportunity to develop skills that are not taught in a lecture theatre.
We will have talks from industry experts, and guest academics, panels with University of Manchester academics and alumni, a networking event and talks from current students.
Students will be given the stage to give presentations on topics of their choice, discuss their project works or talk about science they find interesting. Remember - there should be a mathematical component in the talk.. 🙂
Your inspiration can be something interesting you learned in a module, something you heard, or even your own research! We will have a practice/training session the week before MIMUC, which will be the perfect opportunity to boost your confidence and get some pointers to improve your talk. If you feel confident, you can enter the competition session, where the presentations will be judged and prizes will be awarded! The prizes will be Amazon vouchers of £250 for first place, £150 for second place and £100 for third place!
In addition, you will have the chance to attend various industry talks and panel sessions, where experts in their fields will discuss how they use mathematics in their everyday work. Moreover, there will be research and alumni panels so you can explore possible future paths you can follow, ask questions to experts, and much more.
Finally, don't forget the social side of this event! Between sessions you will have the chance to network with your peers, speakers from industry and Manchester alumni. We will provide lunch on both days to facilitate conversations about the conference, and a dedicated 'networking' coffee event on the Wednesday where you will be able to interact with many of our guests.

Industry guest speakers
Dr. Michail Vamvakaris...
...is a Machine Learning Quant Researcher in the Bloomberg AI team who graduated with a PhD in Machine Learning from the University of Manchester Computer Science department. He has previously worked as a senior ML research engineer at Canopy (Ford), the head of data science at Data Technics, the team lead for ML Quant Research at Barings and the the team lead for ML Research at Greensill.
Mauricio Ramos...
...is a Data Scientist at Meta (parent company of Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp and others) working on augmented reality in the Reality Labs division. He graduated from the University of Manchester with a BSc in Economics and later did a Masters in Economics and Management. He is passionate about Econometrics, Statistics and cycling(!). He has previously worked in data at Jumia and Criteo.
Guest academic Speakers
Dr. Nikita Nikolaev...
... is a mathematician and a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Birmingham. He is a member of the Geometry and Mathematical Physics research group. He studied at the universities of Waterloo and Toronto, graduating with a PhD on the Abelianisation of Logarithmic Connections. He has previously held postdoctoral positions in Geneva and Sheffield and he is a a second-generation mathematical descendant of Nigel Hitchin!
Dr. Eleanor Johnstone...
... is a postdoctoral fluid dynamics researcher at the University of Edinburgh, studying glacial melt of the glacial fjords in Greenland. She recently graduated from a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the University of Manchester. She has also studied at Imperial College London and the University of Cambridge. Her research centres around understanding the behaviour of fluids in many different physical situations, from turbulent flow around wings, to small-scale processes such as inkjet printing, to understanding dynamics of the oceans.
Academic panel
Our academic panel will be made up of current University of Manchester academics at various stages in their careers.
Interested in a career in academia? The academic panel session will be a chance for you to ask our panel about their careers, their research, and their teaching.
Prof. Louise Walker
Academic with a focus on teaching and scholarship
Dr. Aram Dermenjian
Heilbronn Fellow in Mathematics
Dr. Jonathan Rawlinson
Teaching Fellow in Mathematics
Soinbhe Nic Dhonncha
PhD Student
Kai Prince
PhD Student
Alumni panel
Our alumni panel will be made up of past University of Manchester students from the Faculty of Science and Engineering who have gone on to have careers in industry.
The alumni panel session will be a chance for you to ask our panel about their careers, and how they got to where they are since leaving the university.
Information about Student Talks
We will have presentations from many different areas of maths, science and engineering. Prizes will be awarded for the best student presentations! The prizes will be Amazon vouchers of £250 for first place, £150 for second place and £100 for third place!
Prize criteria:
-
Evidence of an excellent understanding of the mathematics involved in the problem proposed.
-
Clear communication of the problem.
-
An understanding of current research in the area examined and an indication of further possible research that could be undertaken.
-
An innovative approach to a standard problem
All applications for the award will be considered, the best submissions will be shortlisted and the presentations will be judged on the day.
Information session
We held an information session on 22nd Feb where we spoke about what presenting would involve, and give some information on how to give a good talk! The resources from that session are included below:
Recording of the information session is here.
Slides from the session are here.
Beamer sample tex file is here. You can paste this into Overleaf/ your favourite LaTeX editor and try it out.
If you are interested in having a go, the link to register and send your abstract is here.
Abstracts, giving an overview of the proposed talk and the title of the talk, should be limited to 200 words.
Practice session
In advance of the conference, training/practise session(s) will take place to support any presenters who wish to submit an abstract, but need a boost in their confidence! In a safe environment, with only a few fellow students and the conference organisers, we will meet, discuss about tips of a good presentation and, of course, practise!
Click here for some useful resources on how to build a successful presentation.
Date: 15/03/2023 2pm onwards
Location: Engineering Building theatre A.
Some advice for presenters:
-
The talks should last 20 minutes and will be followed by a few minutes for questions. You must allow time for questions and not run over your allotted 25 minutes. This is to ensure the smooth running of the conference.
-
Try not to get too detailed or fit too much in. Understanding the statement of a theorem can be difficult enough, let alone understanding the proof. Remember, that your audience will be fellow students of a general mathematics background, and a lot of people may not know what you know. A successful talk is one where the audience comes away knowing something they didn't before, or having found what you had to say interesting.
